MANILA, Philippines — Rains are expected in parts of Mindanao and Eastern Visayas due to the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) on Saturday, June 14, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
The ITCZ is an area where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet.
“These rains can possibly be strong rains,” Pagasa weather specialist Grace Castañeda said in Filipino during the agency’s morning weather forecast.
She noted that the ITCZ will particularly cause rainfall from 50 to 100 millimeters for the next 24 hours in the provinces of Davao Occidental, Davao Oriental, Sarangani and Surigao del Sur.
In the rest of the country, the easterlies – warm winds from the Pacific Ocean – prevail.
According to Pagasa, the easterlies will cause cloudy weather conditions with high chances of rain in the provinces of Batanes and Cagayan.
The rest of Luzon, including Metro Manila, can expect partly cloudy to cloudy weather also due to the easterlies, Pagasa detailed.
“There will be some heat in the weather conditions we will experience in the late morning, but in the afternoon and evening, the chances of sudden rain showers and thunderstorms are higher due to the easterlies,” Castañeda said mostly in Filipino.
The easterlies are also projected to cause sudden rain showers in Palawan and the rest of the Visayas, Pagasa said.

The national weather agency further said it was not monitoring any low pressure areas or tropical cyclones within the country’s area of responsibility.
Additionally, Pagasa did not issue a gale warning but said waters off extreme Northern Luzon were expected to have moderate to rough conditions. /jpv
