MANILA, Philippines — Detained former Negros Oriental 3rd District Rep. Arnolfo Teves needs a “major surgery,” said his legal counsel on Tuesday.
Teves’ lawyer Atty. Ferdinand Topacio made the pronouncement after Teves was hospitalized on Tuesday morning due to stomach pains.
“After being examined at a government hospital this morning until mid-afternoon, the doctors therein have decided that Mr. Teves’ condition requires major surgery in another hospital with additional equipment and facilities,” Topacio told reporters in a message.
“Thus, Mr. Teves had been recommended by government doctors to be transferred to St. Luke’s Medical Center, Bonifacio Global City,” he added.

Meanwhile, Topacio said all trial courts where Teves has pending cases have already been informed of the expelled lawmaker’s situation.
When asked about the doctors’ diagnosis of Teves’ condition, Topacio said that he is not at liberty to disclose any related information.

Teves is facing 10 counts of murder, 14 counts of frustrated murder and four counts of attempted murder under the Revised Penalty Code.
These charges relate to the killing of then Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo and nine others or what is known as the Pamplona Massacre in 2023.
After years of being overseas, the expelled lawmaker was deported by authorities in Timor-Leste following his arrest by Timorese immigration authorities on May 28 at his residence in Dili.
He was brought back to the Philippines the following evening.
